Day 2: Castle hill towns

The next day we finished driving north along the west coast and glazed over the top of the island, so it naturally involved lots of driving. We managed with an early start and skipping over the larger cities, only stopping to ask for directions.

On our morning run through Bosa in the morning.
There was a lot of Spanish influence in the architecture.
At the top of the hill was the medieval Castello Malaspina
The quiet town is surrounded by mountains and is at the banks of the River Temo. The cutesy B&B After checking out we headed up the coastal road toward Alghero. More watchtowers and old farm houses overlook the cliffs.
We got turned around in the second largest city in Sardinia, Sassari. At least we caught a glimpse of one of the basilicas on our way.
A little town
We were advised that Castelsardo (on the coast north of Sassari, overlooking the Golfo dell'Asinara) was very beautiful so we took a little diversion to check it out.

There was actually a little old town inside the castle walls. Of course, pretty much everything was closed. This wasn't a bad thing considering we were only missing out on tourist shops.
A picnic at the top. For variety, we are eating our cold beans and sauce with one of the local flat breads. This one is hard and crispy, like a baked tortilla.
Twisty old road back downHeading east and inland there were lots of rocky outcroppings. This was the Roccia dell'Elefante (Elephant Rock), which totally blew my mind.
We clipped along so well that we actually made it to our next hotel (in the middle of nowhere, close-ish to Arzachena) before sunset. We took our passeggiata (evening stroll) through the nearby village of San Pantaleo, 'famous' for having buildings made of granite. I suppose even these small provincial towns need something to put them on the map. It was a quiet, isolated place and the sunset turned the cliffs a wonderful pinkish orange.

Back at the hotel, trying to make our beans and sauce dinner more elegant by sharing a cup of wine-in-a-box (which, based on our recent taste tests, often tastes better than the bottled stuff!).
