Like in many parts of the East coast, it has been an unusually mild winter. Many days have been in the 50s and some even reached 60 60 degrees. Needless to say, the grass has remained green and buds are coming out on the trees already. While I hate to admit I don't mind the convenience of a mild, dry winter, it is apparent that there is something unusual in the air. My guess is that it is a scorching summer slinking around the corner.
Yesterday we finally got a little snow, about 6 or 7 inches of it. Since the precipitation started as rain, when it finally began to snow it froze to the damp surfaces, making everything look especially furry, heavy, and white. The clouds cleared out by the late afternoon and the sunset turned my walk home into a dazzling display of colors.

The surprising view after stepping outside the lab; we have no windows and had no idea the sun was out and creating a light show! |

This morning there was an equally beautiful sunrise. It was great to enjoy the park from the comfort of snowshoes rather than running shoes. Running in snow reminds me of a woolly mammoth trapped in a tar pit... and I am the woolly mammoth :o( By comparison, wearing snowshoes is like riding along in an all-terrain vehicle!

Yes, my feet were as cold as they look, but at least being encased in ice helped to insulate them :P |
